Alcoholic Self Screening Tests
The following six Self Screening Questionnairres are some of the most commonly used tests to determine ones level of Alcohol Dependence and the possibilities and options for Alcohol Rehabilitation.
National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Questionaire (NCADD)
The NCADD consists of ten questions that are part of a full 26 question self test designed by the nationwide volunteer group, National Council on Alcoholism. It consists of basic Yes or No answers.

Johns Hopkins University Drinking Scale
Consists of twenty questions used to determine your stage of Alcoholism. Early, Middle or Late Stage Alcoholism will affect your treatment options. This is a very eye opening test for someone who has never taken a personal evaluation
of their own drinking problem.

Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST)
The MAST test consists of 24 questions to determine the presence of Alcoholism. Though it is considered a “sensitive” test in that it often returns a false positive, it is considered a very reliable tool when used in conjunction with other tests.
Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (SMAST)
Consists of thirteen questions taken directly from the MAST test above. This test is considered to be almost as reliable as the above mentioned full MAST Test but can allow for a quicker screening for alcoholism.
Michigan Alcohol Screening Test - Geriatric Version (MAST-G)
This 24 question test was designed for those individuals 65 and older. It takes into account the special needs of the elderly including medical problems that may not be present in younger people with drinking problems and a difference in social and employment atmospheres.
The CAGE Questionaire
The simplest of all the Alcoholic Screening Tests it was developed by John Ewing, M.D. It is a simple four question test used by many health care practitioners to quickly assess a patients potential drinking problem.
The questions are as follows:
- Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
- Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
- Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
- Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (eye opener)?
